Is it fair to have just one horse?

Tuesday, November 18th, 2014

You may have seen our recent Facebook post ‘horses are like chocolates you can’t have just one’. We asked our followers whether this statement was true and were completely overwhelmed by the response we had! Stories about how many horses you all owned came flooding in thick and fast and we found it so hard to pick our favourite that we ended up with three winners! It has made us think though, is it fair to have just one horse?

When we make the decision to buy or re-home a cat or a dog we don’t automatically think ‘he/she might get lonely, I must get two’. The same applies with a rabbit, guinea pig or hamster. But it seems different with a horse. Why?

In Switzerland you can’t have ‘just one’. You must have more than one horse kept together or the government will come along and remove your horse into their care. This ensures that horses are kept in a more social environment, a way of putting the horse’s interests first.

Out of the 300 comments that we received on our Facebook post our three winning stories came from the following equestrian enthusiasts and horse lovers!

“My daughter (she’s 21! ) rescued an appi gelding and he is the whole world to her she was asked to take on a little spotted mare too and said yes! Then she took on another rescue cob ! And believe it or not rescued an old mare which was losing the fight for life! So we have four all rescues all very different but they all mean so much to us and they will all live the rest if their lives happy and healthy xxx”

“Ok on behalf of my daughter niamh who is now 12 . Nearly 13
Niamh had Alot of problems with mixing with other children at nursery then at school but she loved animals esp horses she has a few lessons then we looked to get one on loan. We advertised and after a good few months found jubilee. He was 25 then but still jumping etc . He became her best friend and she suddenly had lots to tell her peers etc at school . She was diagnosed with aspergers syndrome and peoples thoughts feelings and meanings were a mystery to her but not jubilee. She understood him .. They became a fantastic team soon he taught her how to ride really well and through shows and gymkhana she overcame lots of social problems. We owe him so much he is now 32 and still does some showing bringing home ribbons everytime . He follows niamh round like a dog and my grandson now rides him occasionally as niamh now has a 15hh mare Cleo who she also loves to bits but everyone will always have a special place for jubilee he gave niamh a life. . Of course I then got my own horse to ride with niamh. .called nova who after losing my dad n my brother close together gave me a reason to get up n keep smiling .. precious gifts horses are xxxx”

“Had one…. Got bought another as a wedding present as first one getting older and retiring, 2nd one very soon went lame and ended surgery, rescued another so I could ride…. She turned out to have health issues, moved yards to my own ace (fatal) and took a pony with me who was 3rd ones best friend and YO didn’t want any more…. Then got offered another rescue that owner didn’t want…. Now upto 5….. Was then given another as a house warming present (another rescue)…. This one was only little and needed a friend so another rescue arrived!! Then decided I needed another that I could actually ride properly so bought a nice youngster…. He has since bust 5 ligaments in his leg so no more riding for him….. So I then had to get another youngster!! Phew….. Currently have 7 of them…. Lost 2 due to old age.”

Happy New Year

Friday, January 18th, 2013

Happy New Year to everyone, I hope that 2013 brings you all that you are hoping for including of course, many hours of equestrian pursuits! We have had a busy start to the year with lots of bookings received already across all of our carefully selected short breaks and longer holidays. As always I must remind you that if you are thinking of taking a horse riding holiday in Europe this year, then book your flights as soon as possible as they do nothing but get more expensive! The low cost airlines start off with the cheapest fares and then as the plane fills the price goes up and up! Our centre close to Malaga proved hugely popular last year, no surprise really as the accommodation is 4 star plus and the horses and facilities are probably the best I have ever seen in Spain! We have a new riding holiday in Portugal this year, located in the popular Algarve region access from the UK is easy into Faro airport.

The Castle in Italy has provided top quality riding breaks for us for over 5 years now, the thought of staying in a castle with beautiful gardens, a lovely pool and fabulous riding is a tempting thought!

Back in the UK we continue to have exclusive rights to ride on the Rushmore Estate and demand here through 2012 has persuaded the owners to build a charming log cabin in their gardens so now you can be even closer to their lovely horses. Here at our home base in Cheshire we opened The Country Lodge in September of last year, this beautiful property has 3 double bedrooms, a huge living area and 3 bathrooms. The quality of the riding we offer here is superb (although I say it myself) but if that isn’t enough have a look at our testimonials page and you will see I am not the only one that is of this opinion!

As always myself (Sarah), Lindsey and Lou are always available to assist you, you can call us for a chat 8.30 – 6.30 Monday to Friday and Saturday morning. We have designed and written 90% of the holidays on site, these are all unique to Equestrian Escapes and we really do know these holidays. As instructors and riders ourselves we understand ability and confidence levels and it is our aim to match you with the perfect break and the perfect equestrian partner to share it with!

Tack Guru – New Product Review Site Makes Comparison Shopping for Equestrians Easier Than Ever Before

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011 is a new product review website developed for equestrians. The site allows horse owners to read about the experiences (good and bad) that other knowledgeable equestrians have had with the products they want to buy or try. The site includes reviews for tack, horse clothing, equine feeds, stable supplies, supplements, and equestrian clothing and equipment.

“In today’s tight economy every purchase that you make for your horse undergoes extra scrutiny,” explained site developer Liz Goldsmith. “If I want to buy a saddle, or try a supplement or medication, or buy a helmet, I find it very helpful to read about others’ experiences. When I looked for a site that offered this type of information, I couldn’t find anything that was like I envisioned. Either the scope was limited or the reviews were on manufacturers or tack store sites, which might be biased.

“Research shows that user reviews have the greatest influence in a buying decision,” she continued. “People value the opinions of their peers even more than single reviews by ‘experts.’ That makes quite a bit of sense because with items such a saddles, personal preference plays a large role in someone’s satisfaction.”

Goldsmith spent more than a year researching review sites and thinking about how she could make a site that offered a unique perspective. “I looked at review sites across many different industries and cherry picked the features that I thought were most compelling,” she explained. “I also found that people on equine forums would ask for opinions on different products and I thought it would be so much more helpful if this information was organized in a way that was more accessible – easier to find, listed in one place, and with an aggregate rating.”

As a result of her research, features:

  • Rated user reviews that provide both individual comments and an overall ranking. It was important to her that you could see an aggregate “score” that spans multiple reviews.
  • A format that combines multiple reviews in a single location. She didn’t want people to have to keep “clicking” to read more reviews.
  • A broad scope of products. Rather than just focus on tack, she wanted to create a single source for the full range of products that equestrians use and need. The site addresses feeds, supplements, stable supplies, blankets, tack, equestrian clothing and even provides a place to rank on-line suppliers. is free to use but requires registration. “I have found that when people must register, the quality of their reviews is higher because the authors have some accountability,” said Goldsmith. “In addition, when you find a reviewer whose views you agree with, you want to find other products they liked or disliked.” She explained that “The site was in beta testing for several months last year and I was very impressed by the insights offered by reviewers. This is a sport where the users have a lot of knowledge and experience to share.” is physically located in Lincoln, Mass.  Site owner and developer Elizabeth Goldsmith is a life-long equestrian who has tried many of the products reviewed in the site. She encourages all equestrians to share their opinions on the products they have tried.

Horse Riding Experiences Of 2010

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

2010 is drawing to an end but what a year it’s been! As everyone is rushing around adding those finishing touches to the Christmas preparations, buying and wrapping those last few presents and fighting their way through the crowds at the supermarket for the big food shop I thought what perfect time to reflect on what has been a fantastic year! Find the time to take a few moments out of your busy day to read what lovely things our customers had to say about us and their 2010 holidays.

In February Sandra enjoyed a holiday in Cheshire at our Country House Hotel – “Brilliant weekend. By far the best horse-riding experience I’ve had, the teachers were patient and knowledgeable and I felt I learned a lot. The hacks were great fun and were a good opportunity to put the techniques we learned into practise, as well as a brilliant way to see the countryside. We really enjoyed our experience, can think of nothing that would have improved it.”

In March Sam and Seb travelled to Tarifa – “We had a five night break in Tarifa at the end of March, the whole experience was fantastic, the instructors were so friendly and really wanted us to learn so I would recommend it to anyone who would like to try something different. The whole thing had a great laid back vibe and you could tell that the horses were well looked after and loved it.”

In May David and Kathryn stayed in Jerez for the annual Feria – “This was our first time with Equestrian Escapes, but it will not be our last! All arrangements were efficiently made and everything worked like clockwork. The structure of the week was expertly put together – we would never have been able to do this ourselves. The accommodation chosen for us was first class and well positioned in the city centre, within walking distance of most of the attractions, and the hotel staff  were so helpful, kind and courteous. The riding with Alphonso was an unbelievable experience, exciting, safe and pleasurable – not to be missed! It goes down as the best holiday ever!”

In June Georgina spent 2 nights with us on the Adult Intensive riding course in Cheshire – “I just wanted to drop you a note to say thank you for a lovely riding break last week.  I thoroughly enjoyed the riding in Cheshire, Sandra and the staff were very welcoming.  Your expertise was much appreciated when planning my schedule, I was really happy with the lunge and flat lessons and the number of rides out that I did – it all worked out perfectly.  Except of course for the fact that after 12 years of no riding my body was physically battered afterwards!  Thank goodness Chris found a seat-saver for me before my 3 hour ride! Thank you again, I would thoroughly recommend Equestrian Escapes and hope to be back sometime with my sister in tow.”

In July Mrs Smillie travelled to Portugal – “Great! The setting was beautiful and placed on the Obidos lagoon. The service was easy and hassle free which made the whole trip run so smoothly. The eco-camp that I stayed at was really different but I enjoyed it so much. The tipi was lovely, the bed was very comfy and I slept like a baby every night! The quality of the riding was excellent and the beach ride was exceptional. I could not believe my eyes when i got there. Our horses were absolutely gorgeous and so incredibly soft natured. In all of my riding experience, I never have come across such fantasticly well natured animals. They were a total delight. My overall experience was great, I thoroughly enjoyed my four day stay and would have liked to stay for much longer! I plan on recommending this holiday to both my family and friends!”

In September Jessica and James went to East Devon – “Having recently enjoyed an Equestrian Escapes holiday to Devon I thought I would write and tell you about it. The tuition at the riding stables is second to none and the hacks over Woodbury Common are a slice of heaven.”

In November Jean-Pierre and Elizabeth travelled to Berkshire – “Hello!
Our family recently booked a short break with you and stayed at Maggie’s in Berkshire. We had an unbelievably fabulous time. The accommodations were perfect and it was wonderful to wake up to the sound of hoof-steps in front of our cottage and open the shutters to friendly equine faces across the yard. Maggie was amazing — she offered to watch our 3 year old daughter, Axelle, while my husband and I had lessons. The two of them got on famously to the point that our daughter was completely devastated to leave the farm. She sobbed and sobbed as we said goodbye to Maggie. (This is after Axelle had announced to us that she wanted to stay with Maggie and be one of her “children” and “Papa and Mama could go back to London” and she would walk home later. “Is London far to walk to?”) And best of all, my husband and I think we actually made some progress with our riding! We definitely will be back! Thanks so much for offering a most memorable holiday!”

I hope you enjoyed reading this little handful of testimonials from our customers. If you require any information about the holidays you have read about or any of the packages on our website please contact us in the office on 01829 781 123, or email

Finally have a absolutley fantastic Christmas and New Year from all of us at Equestrain Escapes.

Riding in Southern Spain

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

As you are all aware the weather in the UK over the past month has gone from bad to worse to impossible. It seems that many parts of the UK have ground to a stand-still. Hundreds of schools have had to close, driving conditions have been hazardous to say the least, and rail and air passengers were delayed on many flights leaving badly affected areas. For the first time our riding centre in Cheshire had to cancel all rides on the 5th December as the melting snow and freezing rain had transformed the yard and paths into an ice rink. The bad news is The Met Office has issued further heavy snow warnings for Yorkshire and Humber, east Midlands, east and north-east England, London and south-east England.

As Lou and I were left in the -6 conditions here in the office in Cheshire, Sarah, our managing director headed off to what we all thought was a rainy Southern Spain. Little did we know (including her) that there was a whopping 33 degree difference in temperature and it was a blazing 27 degrees celcius! Hard to comprehend when only 2 1/2 hours earlier she had left an artic Liverpool John Lennon airport on a Ryan Air flight heading for Malaga.

Hardly laughing when we heard this the next day we were soon cheered up when Sarah told us she was in a bit of a ‘sticky’ situation as she had packed for rain – 2 pairs of wooly boots and several pairs of jeans and thick jumpers!

Thanks to the un-announced spectacular weather Sarah enjoyed 5 days of glorious sunshine on the coast of Marbella, riding along the sandy beaches of Southern Spain and sampling the wonderful gastronomy and wine that the Spanish are so famous for.

If you are interested in any of our Spanish riding breaks please contact Sarah, Lou or myself Lindsey in the Equestrian Escapes office on 01829 781 123.

December update!

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

As you may already know Equestrian Escapes have moved offices and we are just about up and running again as normal – after the palava of installing a new internet and phone system, and just about everything you can think of going wrong DID go worng we are pretty much there (2 weeks later)!

The office is looking great though, huge compared to the last one, the tree is up and the first Christmas card was opened this morning. Although the icy temperatures have managed to freeze our water supply we have not let it darken our festive spirits, instead of endless cups of tea we are now drinking endless cups of hot chocolate which isn’t a bad thing in my eyes!

During the move we managed to stumble upon a very nice picture of Sarah and Sasha – see below

Then we found another took us a while but can you tell the difference??

The funniest thing was when Sarah showed these pictures to her mum, she laughed and said “well of course I know thats you Sarah, they’re your eyes!”

For any more information about Equestrian Escapes please contact Sarah, Lou and Lindsey at call the NEW office on 01829 781123.
